The former president Donald Trump’s right ear was slightly injured in an attempted assassination, and Congress and the executive branch are currently conducting many formal inquiries into the incident. On July 29, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) released a number of texts from a Beaver County Sheriff’s Office counter-sniper stating that, around 4:26 p.m., one hour and forty-five minutes before gunfire broke out at 6:11 p.m., he observed Mr. Crooks acting suspiciously close to the rally site.
The unidentified counter-sniper officer assigned to the rally texted a number of other on-duty local police counter-snipers, “Someone followed our lead and snuck in and parked by our cars just so you know.” The officer writes to the other officers, “He knows you guys are up there,” and includes information on where Mr. Crooks is located in a complex of buildings close to the rally venue. Gregory Nicol, a second police counter-sniper, posted on the same group chat at 5:38 p.m. stating that Mr. Crooks was inspecting the rally site with a rangefinder.
